Is Your Valparaiso Home's Air Making You Sick?

Often, the signs of poor indoor air quality are mistaken for common ailments or seasonal issues. If you or your family experience persistent symptoms while at home, your air could be the culprit.

Signs You Might Have an Indoor Air Quality Problem:

  1.  Worsening allergies or asthma symptoms
  2.  Frequent headaches or fatigue
  3.  Recurring colds or respiratory infections
  4.  Lingering musty or unpleasant odors
  5.  Visible mold or mildew growth
  6.  Excessive dust accumulation, even shortly after cleaning
  7.  Dry, itchy skin or irritated sinuses (often in winter)
  8.  Condensation on windows (excess humidity)

What's Polluting Your Indoor Air?

The air inside your Valparaiso home can be 2-5 times more polluted than the air outside, according to the EPA. Common culprits include:

  1.  Particulates: Dust mites, pollen, pet dander, dirt tracked in from outside.
  2.  Biological Contaminants: Mold spores, bacteria, viruses, fungi. These thrive in humid environments or poorly maintained HVAC systems.
  3.  Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): Gases emitted from cleaning products, paints, furniture, air fresheners, and building materials.
  4.  Humidity Imbalances: Air that's too dry (common in NW Indiana winters) or too humid (summer) creates discomfort and can promote mold growth or damage wood furnishings.

Ignoring these pollutants can lead to chronic health issues and reduce your overall comfort at home.

Our Comprehensive Indoor Air Quality Solutions

Elico Heating & Cooling doesn't believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. We start by understanding your specific concerns and assessing your home's unique environment. Our goal is to recommend and install the most effective IAQ systems to address your problems.

IAQ Testing & Assessment:

Our process begins with listening to your concerns. We may perform visual inspections, check humidity levels, and assess your current HVAC filtration to understand the potential sources and types of pollutants affecting your home.

Our IAQ Solutions Include:

  1.  Air Filtration: Beyond standard furnace filters, we offer High-Efficiency Filters (MERV 11 or higher) that capture smaller particles like pollen, mold spores, and pet dander more effectively, integrating directly with your existing HVAC system.
  2.  Air Purification: Go beyond filtration with Whole-Home Air Purifiers. These systems actively remove or neutralize contaminants. Options include HEPA filters for microscopic particles and UV Germicidal Lights installed within your ductwork or near the indoor coil to destroy bacteria, viruses, and mold spores, preventing them from circulating.
  3.  Humidity Control: Achieve year-round comfort and protection.
  4.  Whole-Home Humidifiers: Combat dry winter air, reducing static electricity, easing dry skin and throats, and protecting wood floors and furniture.
  5.  Whole-Home Dehumidifiers: Remove excess moisture during humid Valparaiso summers, preventing mold growth, improving comfort, and potentially reducing strain on your air conditioner.
  6.  Ventilation Systems: Introduce fresh, filtered air while exhausting stale, polluted air. Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERVs) and Heat Recovery Ventilators (HRVs) are efficient options for tightly sealed homes, improving air quality without significant energy loss.
  7.  Duct Cleaning: While not always necessary for IAQ alone, professional duct cleaning can be beneficial after renovations, if mold is confirmed in the ducts, or if there's evidence of pest infestation, removing built-up debris that can harbor contaminants.

Benefits Beyond Just Breathing Easier

Investing in your home's indoor air quality offers significant advantages:

  1.  Improved Health: Reduce triggers for allergies, asthma, and other respiratory conditions. Experience fewer colds and viruses.
  2.  Enhanced Comfort: Enjoy balanced humidity levels year-round, eliminate unpleasant odors, and notice less dust.
  3.  Home Protection: Minimize dust buildup, prevent damaging mold and mildew growth, and protect wood furnishings from dryness.
  4.  HVAC Efficiency & Longevity: Cleaner air means a cleaner HVAC system. Components like coils and blowers stay free of debris, allowing the system to run more efficiently and potentially extending its lifespan.

Indoor Air Quality FAQs

Q: How often should I change my air filter for better IAQ?

A: It depends on the filter type and your home environment (pets, allergies). Basic 1-inch filters may need monthly changes, while high-efficiency media filters can last 6-12 months. We'll advise based on your specific filter.

Q: Do air purifiers eliminate dust completely?

A: While high-quality air purifiers significantly reduce airborne dust and other particles, they don't eliminate the need for regular cleaning of surfaces where dust settles.

Q: Are whole-home humidifiers better than portable ones?

A: Whole-home units provide consistent humidity levels throughout your entire house, integrate directly with your HVAC system for efficiency, and require less frequent maintenance (water refills) than multiple portable units.

Q: How long does IAQ system installation take?

A: Most IAQ system installations (like UV lights or humidifiers) can be completed within a few hours by our technicians.

Q: Can improving IAQ lower my energy bills?

A: Yes, indirectly. By keeping your HVAC system cleaner (e.g., with better filtration or UV lights preventing coil growth), it can run more efficiently, potentially reducing energy consumption. Proper humidity control also allows you to feel comfortable at slightly higher (in summer) or lower (in winter) thermostat settings.

Customer Testimonials

Hear what our happy customers have to say.
We have been using Elico Heating & Cooling for 3 years now and have been very pleased with their service. They seem to be very honest and haven’t tried to suggest any repair that wasn’t needed. We had a couple of issues that they resolved in a timely manner.  We will continue to use them for all of our HVAC related needs. Today we had the pleasure of Andrew performing our scheduled maintenance and he was also very thorough. No complaints so far!! Highly recommend them for all your HVAC needs.

After someone came to do the fall service on our furnace the technician talked my husband into replacing our furnace even though it was working. I called Elico for a second opinion. Chris, Elico's technician, explained to me how the furnace and the humidifier worked. He showed me how to change the filters. The best news of all we don't have to replace our furnace at this point. I appreciated receiving an honest review of our furnace and how it is working. I look forward to having Chris become our new furnace technician.

Elico Heating and Cooling came on short notice to help us out at the Dunes Arts Foundation.  Their technician was on time and went through a methodical process of elimination to track down a bare wire that was causing the circuit fault.  The repair was very reasonably priced and came quickly at a crucial time for us.  Very much appreciated.

We had Elico come out to do a small job. After a part was missing and a gas line happened to be in the way, the job got a little bigger. James, Chris and the gang were flexible and returned within a few days and got the job done. Very professional, on time and cleaned up! We couldn’t ask for more! I think we’ve found our HVAC vendor! Elico could use a little more knowledge in the office. On a couple of occasions, office staff had the techs going to the wrong address! Overall, 5 stars!!!
